MTS is actually MPEG-4 AVC/ encoded video format which is commonly used by HD camcorders such as Sony, Canon, Panasonic. Although iPad also supports codec, it can't directly play MTS video files. So if you want to watch your camcorder videos on iPad, you need to convert MTS to iPad compatible format, such as MOV, MP4, M4V, etc.

More about MTS/M2TS
AVCHD, short for Advanced Video Coding High Definition, is a video file format primarily designed for use in HD consumer camcorders. It was jointly developed by Panasonic and Sony as a competitor against HDV (by JVC and Sony) and XDCAM EX (by Sony). The general file extensions of AVCHD video are MTS (on camcorder) and M2TS (after import to computer). Unfortunately, iPad doesn't support MTS/M2TS natively, you need a video converter to transform videos to iPad compatible formats such as MOV, MP4, M4V, etc.
